Life as a graduate apprentice at TBR

What is life like as a graduate apprentice?

I feel like I get to experience the best of both worlds. As a student, I enjoy studying and theory and of course, the socialising aspects. At work, I get an understanding of how to put this theory into practice and learn how the business world operates. My team is very supportive and encouraging, and I feel like I learn so much working closely with them. It is also nice to have a wage coming in and I look forward to buying my first car this year!

What drew you to the graduate apprenticeship scheme and TBR?

There is such a growing demand for software engineering – my course, facilitated by the University of Glasgow, is a popular choice for students and there were many companies you could choose to work with. TBR really appealed to me, as the projects I would be involved in sounded very exciting, the people were warm and friendly, and I felt like it would be a good place that I could grow and develop over the next few years.

Can you give us an insight into your day-to-day?

Despite only being here for a few months, I have been given lots of responsibility on projects and have got to grips with different parts of the business; from how we develop our tools (such as MyTBR), to understanding how technology can improve our customer service. No day is really the same and I enjoy feeling like I am contributing to the wider business. I feel like I am part of something bigger and particularly looking at the transportation industry, I look forward to seeing how new technologies (e.g. AI and machine learning) will transform the industry.

What advice do you have to any other budding graduate apprentices?

I could really see graduate apprenticeships becoming the future, as there are so many benefits to it. You get to study and understand the working world, making the transition after graduation much easier. If you find the right subject and the right business to support you, then it is a win-win so I would really recommend just going for it!
