An introduction into the world of business

Throughout my three years as an undergraduate, the one thing professors could not stress enough was the importance of completing an internship. When my junior year started, I began the process of looking, but the experience of searching for an internship or job was completely foreign to me. Out of all the companies I spoke to, TBR was the most attractive and is where I set my sights

When I received the email that I was selected for a summer internship program, I was happy as well as nervous. My family came to the United States from Brazil in the early 90s with the goal of the American dream. Their options were limited because of their education and the language barrier. To my parents they were not working for themselves, they were working for me. They came to this great country wanting to one day be able to get their child through college and give me the life they couldn’t have.

Interning at TBR was one of the most important steps for me to be able to achieve my goal of starting my career following college. This experience gave me a chance to learn from people who have been in the field for years and could not only show me how things work, but could also be my mentors. Nick Marotta, TBR’s Global Operational Improvement Manager, filled that role and beyond for me. Nick was helpful whilst also allowing me to figure things out on my own. Whenever I had any questions, he was able to guide me in the right direction, whilst also giving me room to add my own touch to any assignments.

My day-to-day at TBR was occupied by a variety of projects. Based on my progress on a project I had been working on, I would either be given another project or small research task to complete. My main responsibilities were assembling newsletters for the roadshow and events teams. In addition to the newsletters, I was tasked with various research activities which covered several topics including competitor analysis, social media management and marketing strategies.

One of the hardest parts about being a college student is knowing exactly what you want to do with your life when you finish college. This internship not only gave me a preview of life in a dynamic office environment, but it also gave me a better understanding of what role and business I would like to be a part of. A lot of students think the hardest thing is determining their major, but they never think about the specifics within that major. Completing this internship with TBR has helped me to not only gain invaluable on-site experience but it has also allowed me to pinpoint exactly what I want to do in the future.

The weeks spent at TBR’s Boston office embodied the saying “it’s a marathon not a sprint”. With everything I got my hands on, I discovered it was not about how quickly you can finish something but how well you execute each task. My experience at TBR was exceptional and one I would recommend to anyone. I was able to not only come out with respectable experience but with gems about the marketing and business world. During my internship I learned so much about, not only the field of marketing, but myself as a worker which has allowed me to leave this summer internship with a head start in my future.
